The Smiling CollectionNobody can feel serious all of the time, especially living here in the Keys. After all, artistic inspiration comes both from within and without. What I call my "Smiling Collection" has been inspired by my tropical surroundings. When I first moved to the Keys, I spent most of my time o the water, in the water. The brilliant array of colors in the underwater world fascinated me. The marine creatures never ceased to amaze me, and always made me smile. While I was honing my sculptural techniques for my female figures, I could not help but start to make little fish, which I put on necklaces. I always added smiles to their faces, because I always seemed to be smiling when I made them. So it only made sense to call them "Smiling Fish." And they have a legend... From fish came dolphins, manatees, turtles; then flamingoes , and even flying pigs! What remained unchanged was that they all smiled. I'm not sure anymore who smiled first! |

Margarita FishAs I gained more understanding of my clay, my figures got larger, and LARGER. The half-circle smile that was first made with a pencil point gradually changed into sculpted lips, later with teeth, some with gold caps! The once pencil point eyes became more expressive, with eyelids and eyelashes. Before I knew it, my Smiling Fish had evolved into... Margarita Fish! Why call them Margarita Fish? Well, we are living in the Keys, and they all look like they know it's five o'clock somewhere... |
